Coupled mode theory for photonic crystal cavity-waveguide interaction.
We derive a coupled mode theory for the interaction of an optical cavity with a waveguide that includes waveguide dispersion. The theory can be applied to photonic crystal cavity waveguide structures. We derive an analytical solution to the add and drop spectra arising from such interactions in the limit of linear dispersion. In this limit, the spectra can accurately predict the cold cavity qua...
متن کاملImproved coupled-mode theory for codirectionally and contradirectionally coupled waveguide arrays
A coupled-mode theory is derived from the scalar wave equation for the interaction between forwardand backward-traveling waves in a general slowly varying coupled waveguide array containing an arbitrary number of guides with a grating overlay. The equations include the effects of nonnegligible model overlap terms and changes in modal overlap but still demonstrate power conservation. Numerical r...
متن کاملRadiatively coupled waveguide polarization splitter simulated by wave-matching based coupled mode theory
Abstract: Coupled mode theory is applied to an arrangement of three raised strip waveguides with a multimode central strip. We use semivectorial numerically computed modes of the three single isolated waveguides as a basis for a propagating supermode analysis of the entire structure. The pronounced polarization dependence of the raised strip guides allows for the design of a conveniently short ...
متن کاملDesign of ultra-broadband terahertz polymer waveguide emitters for telecom wavelengths using coupled mode theory.
We use coupled mode theory, adequately incorporating optical losses, to model ultra-broadband terahertz (THz) waveguide emitters (0.1-20 THz) based on difference frequency generation of femtosecond infrared (IR) optical pulses. We apply the model to a generic, symmetric, five-layer, metal/cladding/core waveguide structure using transfer matrix theory. We provide a design strategy for an efficie...
متن کاملEffective-index method and coupled-mode theory for almost-periodic waveguide gratings: a comparison.
Contradirectional propagation through active, first-order, almost-periodic, corrugated waveguide gratings is analyzed by using both coupled-mode theory and a combined effective-index/impedance-matching matrix technique. For TE-mode operation, which is near the first-order Bragg wavelength, the equivalence of the two techniques is analytically demonstrated for shallow surface corrugations.
